The 2009 Dr. John Christy versus Dr. William Schlesinger debate
Yesterday we reported that Alabama State Climatologist Dr. John Christy of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, had split ranks with other members of the discredited “hockey team” of climatologists. Contributing author John O’Sullivan just passed along a link to a 2009 debate Christy was in that we thought you might be interested in viewing. The original one hour fifteen minute video is hosted at the John Locke Foundation site in a Quicktime format you can watch there. But My Climate Buzz page has divided up the debate into bite size pieces, and in a larger format. You can go there to watch, or watch them all embedded here.
Christy debates President of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Dr. William Schlesinger on the potential danger associated with global warming. The debate was during a forum in sponsored by the John Locke Foundation and the Reese Institute for Conservation of Natural Resources at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
There is also a PDF available here, that contains notes (not a transcript) compiled by E. Calvin Beisner.

My thanks to this site for the posting of the Christy VS Schlesinger
debate. I watched it all.. One sounds more like a Politician than a Scientist I thought.
Unbelievable. An IPCC lead author and scientist makes the statements “politicians choose the scientists for the IPCC therefore it is political” and “in a free country we have the ability to pull back the curtain” Isn’t it clear what this man is trying desperately to communicate to us regarding what he knows from the inside? Did Schlesinger attempt to rebut even one of the very specific challenges that Christy laid out? Christy debunked the very heart and soul of the alarmist argument in great detail and Schlesinger had nothing but generalized pablum about complexity to answer with. Schesinger dismisses Christy by making the very point that Chrisy is using to destroy the myths Schelisnger is peddling: it’s very complicated. Of course Schlesinger uses the complexity in a very different way by asking the audience to take him on trust. Bernie Madoff explained his unprecedented ability to realize high returns in good markets and bad as “complicated” When asked by skeptics to reveal his data he replied “why would I show my competition how I’m doing it” Doesn’t that sound like the same scam that the UEA/CRU Team were running? Congress must hold hearings now.
Re: Roe’s comments; (Schlesinger VS Christy)
Having passed 60 years of age and having observed people from the academic world for quite some time. I’ve noted that the folks who have paid their dues with hands on work are the ones I seek knowledge from. I’ve seen Professors put their students in danger totally oblivious of the situation they created. These same people all too often never had the tools in their own hands.
If we knew Christy better, I’d bet he has plenty of mechanical abilities, and a passion for mechanicals. I’d bet much of the data gathering equipment has his finger prints all over it, and out of his passion he could not help but visit every site personally if at all possible.
As for Schlesinger, I don’t see any passion whatsoever. I doubt that Schlesinger owns a pair of boots and might even look down on people with dirt under their finger nails as
people who would waste his time. The comparison between Schlesinger’s style and Madoff, is noteworthy. When you have nothing to counter your opponent; just tell your audience it’s all too complex for them AND your opponent to understand.
Christy can not hide his incredible passion for the topic, and his total commitment in understanding it and getting it right. On the other hand, I have no doubt that Schlesinger
knows far more about building wealth and where his next meal is coming from. I don’t claim building wealth is wrong, I do suggest that Christy is too driven to understand his passion to invest in wealth building. I’d love to see a picture of where each lives, what types of cars they drive. My bet is Christy’s everyday driver will take you to the field, there’s likely mud in the tire treads as I write. Schlesinger’s everyday ride may be chauffeured.
I’d bet I’m not far off..
I’ll bet you’re not far of at all.
