33 historical Climate Change scares
Kirk Meyers at the Seminole County Environmental News Examiner lists 33 tales, during the past 140 years, describing climate changes, and often predicting catastrophic cooling or warming. Here are five of our favorites:
- “The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot” - Washington Post story published Nov. 2, 1922
- Headline: “America in Longest Warm Spell Since 1776; Temperature Line Records a 25-year Rise” – New York Times, March 27, 1933
- “By 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half . . . .” – Life magazine, January 1970
- “In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish.” – Paul Ehrlich, Earth Day, 1970
- Because of increased dust, cloud cover and water vapor, “the planet will cool, the water vapor will fall and freeze, and a new Ice Age will be born.” – Newsweek magazine, Jan. 26, 1970
Do our readers have any others you know of, not in Kirk’s article?
Don’t forget the golden toad. It was a peer reviewed study too.

Unfortunately The Register, not only debunked the claim, they also had some fun at the scientist’s expense.
“Hunt for murderer of lost golden cloud toads hots up”

Original source of these (not acknowledged in the article) was:

The article was compiled from multiple sources on the Web. There is no “original list” from which the content was drawn. The statements, however, are original and are credited to the various sources in which they appeared or to the people who made them.

You forgot 1938…..The year that the NULL HYPOTHESIS of MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING was first proposed…..in a paper published in the QUARTERLY JOURNAL of the ROYAL METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY. The irony is that in 1938 man made warming by the production of CO2 (Plant Food) was promoted as a GOOD thing….in those days many people feared a coming ICE AGE. I have a copy of the original paper as published, good conmen can change GOOD to BAD and BAD to GOOD anytime it suits them if it promotes their particular SCAM.
Thanks, Maurice J, for the heads-up on the 1938 claim. I’ll check it out.

My favourite over the last many years was the Letter from the president of the Royal Society to the Admiralty in 1817…
“It will no doubt have come to your Lordship’s knowledge that a considerable change of climate inexplicable at present to us must have taken place in the Circumpolar Regions, by which the severity of the cold that has for centuries past inclosed (sic) the seas in an impenetrable barrier of ice has been during the last two years greatly abated.
This with information of a similar nature derived from other sources; the unusual abundance of ice islands that have during the last two summers been brought by currents from Davies Streights (sic) into the Atlantic. The ice which has this year surrounded the northern coast of Ireland in unusual quantity and remained there unthawed till the middle of August, with the floods which have during the whole summer inundated those parts of Germany where rivers have their sources in snowy mountains, afford ample proof that the new source of warmth have been opened and give us leave to hope that the Arctic Seas may at this time be more accessible than they have for centuries past, and that discoveries may now be made in them not only interesting to the advancement of science but also to the future intercourse of mankind and the commerce of distant nations.”
I hope I’ve got the quote right — my original “find” in Google Books seems to have been misplaced, and I fetched this (above) off the Internet.
I believe there was more in the original.
