Glaciergate: Another scientist rats on the IPCC’s fraudulent ways
The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.
Yes, you read that right. He admitted it. The dominoes are falling one after the after. What a week its been for seekers of truth!
Just hours ago we published a story which showed Glaciologist Syed Hasnain withheld his knowledge that the Himalayan glacier 2035 melt story was false, and that the company he worked for, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Delhi-based company of which the IPPC Chairman Dr. Pachauri is director-general, benefited by this to the tune of a substantial share of a $500,000 grant from one of America’s leading charities, along with a share in a three million euro research study funded by the EU.
Now, hot on the heels of that, comes a story from the Daily Mail, in which they interview another scientist, Dr. Murari Lal, who admits the data had not been verified.
Here’s the story as the Daily Mail tells it (emphasis ours):
The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.
Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action.
‘It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.’
Dr Lal’s admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation.
According to the IPCC’s statement of principles, its role is ‘to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information – IPCC reports should be neutral with respect to policy’.
The claim that Himalayan glaciers are set to disappear by 2035 rests on two 1999 magazine interviews with glaciologist Syed Hasnain, which were then recycled without any further investigation in a 2005 report by the environmental campaign group WWF.
It was this report that Dr Lal and his team cited as their source.
The WWF article also contained a basic error in its arithmetic. A claim that one glacier was retreating at the alarming rate of 134 metres a year should in fact have said 23 metres – the authors had divided the total loss measured over 121 years by 21, not 121.
Last Friday, the WWF website posted a humiliating statement recognising the claim as ‘unsound’, and saying it ‘regrets any confusion caused’.
Dr Lal said: ‘We knew the WWF report with the 2035 date was “grey literature” [material not published in a peer-reviewed journal]. But it was never picked up by any of the authors in our working group, nor by any of the more than 500 external reviewers, by the governments to which it was sent, or by the final IPCC review editors.’

The reports of Glacioligist Syed Hasnain and Dr. Murari Lal ,having Knowledge, that the report by IPCC stating the demise of Himalalayan glaciers by 2035 was another tale of DOOM to put pressure on politicians and world leaders is more pernicious a LIE than any so far exposed .
What could have been more destructive to the Indian sub continent than the “certainty of drying rivers BY 2035″. An IPCC statement that would affect hundreds of millions of people in only 25 YEARS TIME.
This clearly was NO MISTAKE ,but a callous lie to REALLY FRIGHTEN MILLIONS.
This was a deiberate ploy ,no wonder it was not “peer aproved” ,imagine the panic in India.
Never in the field of human history has such a lie been told to so many by so few .
Ironically it fetched Hasnain one of the highest civilian award in India: Padma shri in 2009 for Himalayan glaciology!
Incidently, Pachauri recieved Padma Vibhusan the same year.
Is there any link between two – two awards?
ADE- agree entirely.
“All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level,
that even the most stupid of those toward whom it is directed will
understand it… Through clever and constant application of propaganda,
people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way
around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.”
Adolf Hitler.
It started with Hansen and Gore, then Mann and Pachauri supported by the UN/IMF/World Bank who want a World Government with themselves as part of the unelected controlling elite.
Small wonder our 3 Labour parties in the UK want to be part of this
money machine – but the tide is turning – hold your nerve everyone
it’s going to get interesting !
Any warmists/alarmists out there care to weigh in?
I’d like to hear, just once more, that “the science is settled.” Or how about another perennial favorite, “That train has left the station.”? Or how about this one, “The story, while true, changes nothing about the overall conclusion that CAGW is real and happening now.”
What the useful idiots (not Hansen, Gore, Pachauri, et al — they’re totally in the know and up to speed) fail to recognize: A tenth of a degree C here and there, a dramatic lie about glaciers hither and yon, and, before you even know it, before you can say Jack Robinson, you’ve got yourself a damned fine narrative. Well, fine until the wheels start to come off.
These are some of the rottenest b*st*rds to ever come down the pike — aging hippies in suits, trying to “change the world.” They need to, DESERVE to finish out their miserable lives in jail.
I’m sorry; if I was to pull a stunt like this, in todays political climate, I would be charged with terrorism. What else can it be, telling over a billion peoples that they will die of thirst in 40years time?
This isn’t bad science; this is criminal.
Fraud is a crime. These people have not comitted a sin, error in judgement, or other less malign human act. They have committed fraud and intended to do so from the beginning. The IPCC is akin to an election board in North Korea. It is a body carefully designed and staffed to achieve a pre-determined result much like the computer programming which continues to produce warming where there is little or none. Rail Roadist Pachauri has been BS-ing so many for so long that he is likely incapable of speaking anything resembling the truth. When he states “our process is robust” he is telling a truth if the truth is that the process produces the pre-determined results everytime. We must have investigative hearings in the Congress of the US soon and they must be transparent. One of our greatest challenges and frankly the one which often makes it appear that we are a quixotic bunch, is the omnipresence of those on the other side. If there are hearings they will of course chair them and attempt to guide them. This is where we need the broader press to rise to the challenge of it’s best self as a counter to established power. While we can with great effort break the inertia that sets the hammer in motion, we will need others to provide the main force on the downswing.
Tom Roe — Your comment is an excellent one.
I would urge my fellow readers to RE-READ the section of your comment beginning: “We must have investigative hearings…”
Your last sentence is also very well targeted. Thanks for the insightful comment, well presented.
Thank you. There are many obviously bright and independent people on this site. I am happy to be on their side. BTW- I recently saw video of Bernie Madoff speaking at a gathering of investors and regulators were he said (paraphrase) ” In today’s regulatory climate it would be virtually impossible to maintain a financial fraud over a long period of time” he blathered on in this same sobber manner for sometime obviously seeking to reassure those placing their hard-earned money in the hands of snakes like himself. I know that we have people out there who could take the Madoff video and split-screen it with Dr. Parchauri to good effect. Personally I can’t think of a better way to illustrate to a wary public that a massive scam is taking place than to link it to Bernie.

There is a very simple reason why none of the reviewers picked up on the 2035 claim. Both the First order draft, and the second order draft make the 2035 claim, but do not include a citation. Only the final released version attributes the claim to the WWF.
What is equally alarming is that person responsible for the 2035 claim, Hasnain, is cited in the same section WGII, 10.6.2, and only a handful of lines after the 2035 claim. To suggest he missed the claim defies logic. What? He only looked at the sentence attributed to him? I doubt it.
