Michael Mann plays softball with Benshi

The Benshi blog has posted their softball interview of Penn State Professor Michael Mann. It’s a horrible effort, but it’s always interesting to hear what the tricky bastard says. There are only two questions that blogger Randy Olson could think of asking Mann on Climategate:

RO – So how was your Christmas this year? Was it a nice relaxed time?

MM – [laughter] Uh, well, obviously when this “Climategate” thing broke just before Thanksgiving it put a little bit of a damper on my holiday experience. Many of my colleagues and I have spent a lot of time over the ensuing months now, responding to the attacks against us. So, no, it wasn’t the most pleasant holiday experience I’ve ever had.

RO – Did you feel embattled at times? Like in the bunker?

MM – We are in a battle — the scientific community. I mean the climate science community has been in battle for years. There’s an organized, well-funded effort to discredit us. And not just our science, but individuals. There’s been an increasing effort towards, so called “Swiftboating” of individual scientists. Smear campaigns run against scientists for the sole purpose of discrediting them, so as to discredit the science. So I think it is very clear that this is the method of attack that the climate-denial-lobby is using.

I wonder if Randy Olson was on the Penn State Inquiry team on Mann.

How very Freudian of him. Making the victim look like the criminal and the criminal look like the victim.

I was waiting for him to scream “I’M RIGHT THE REST OF THE WORLD IS WRONG!!!”

This isn’t a smear campaing, all we demand….and I mean —DEMAND is the Gall Darn TRUTH about so-called Man-made Climate Change. Any dough-head can go out and take a few pictures of a dry lake bed, or a snow free mountain and scream “GLOBAL WARMING”…..but hey, the earth has been warming since the last ice age, so big deal.

They can craft the numbers to say whatever they want ( we know that as a FACT now) so hey Michael, this isn’t about science , it is about plain simple manipulation of facts , as you feel necessary to win a war which is created by your loyal group of minions, who are desperate to scare the population to change their lifestyle..
    GOOD LUCK..

The expression – ‘Pot calling the kettle black-arse’ springs to mind!

He’s upset that people who his friends and colleagues have called “deniers” and “anti-science hacks” for the last two decades are fighting back? Well, perhaps if he had been open to discussion and above board with his data, as any true scientist should be, he won’t have had half the push-back he’s getting now.

Priesthoods never go quitely. Why do they fight when the battle is lost? They cannot endure the humilition and loss of prestige. No problem. We’ll stay the course until the job is finished.

Michael Mann.. What does he have to lose by slinging this kind of crap?? certainly not his reputation, that’s long gone.

  8. Tel says:

A good fraction of the so called “Swiftboating” campaign is Mann’s own work being brought before the light of public scrutiny. Part of this in email form where Mann tries to encourage his fellow scientists to stay on message, and discourages Kieth Briffa from being honest about the level of uncertainty involved in climate science. Part of this is the examination of Mann’s published graphs such as the famous “hide the decline” trick where the graph pretends to present tree ring data but actually contains mixed data using non-tree ring data to force the graph to dovetail neatly with other measurements (thus giving the deliberately misleading and false impression that tree rings are a much better proxy than they actually are).

Now we discover how many data sets have been selectively cherry picked without documentation of the selection criteria without any workable audit trail by which independent review is possible. If Mann seriously wants to stand by his results then he can Mann up a little and stand up to a bit of scrutiny. Any scientist with the first clue about scientific process would be only too willing to subject their process to independent evaluation.

  9. Ken Van Doren says:

Mann is a fraud, and to allow him to keep his job will be to indermine the credibilty of legitimate scientists, which he is not.

    Hey MIKE CLIMATEGATE IS REAL!!!

    WHO ARE THE DENIERS NOW???
