Penn State decision on Michael Mann due on this week

Don't worry, the fix is in.

Don't worry warmers, the fix is in.

Colleen Boyle at Penn State’s Daily Collegian is still on the job, tracking the investigation of Professor Michael Mann. She reports today that the two-month long inquiry has concluded and will release their findings later this week. The inquiry’s findings will determine if they will continue to investigate Mann further.

If you’re new to climategate, Penn State’s inquiry began after hundreds of illegally obtained e-mails were leaked from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England, where critics allege that Penn State’s Michael Mann, East Anglia’s Phil Jones, and others conspired to distort climate change evidence in favor of supporting global warming.

But conservative groups, who know all too well how liberal professors are let off, are already mobilizing to respond to the university’s findings:

Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) — a Penn State student group working to “advance the principles of individual and economic freedom, limited government and traditional values” — has taken an interest in the Mann inquiry.

On Feb. 12, YAF will host a demonstration in front of the HUB to protest what the group feels is a violation of academic integrity, YAF member Samuel Settle said. The 9-12 Project of Central PA, a conservative group, will join the demonstration.

Settle (sophomore-political science and history) said the university’s handling of the inquiry unsettles him.

“What the university has done is they’ve taken three Penn State employees and assigned them to deciding whether or not Mann violated university policy,” he said. “That’s an awful lot of power in the hands of three with no external oversight.”

Anyone care to wager on the outcome?

After reading most of the e-mails and absorbing the content, it is obvious Micheal Mann deserves a prison cell at best. More likely a firing squad for his crimes; obstructing/falsifying scientific research, evading freedom of info inquiries, misappropriating federal funds, destruction of public data, corrupting scientific publications. And just out and out steering of international scientific reseach into the abyss of political gain and doubt beyond any likely repair.

That’s where it all gets tricky. Does he deserve all of the above? Yes. What would that look like? A trail or hearing will bring cries of “martyr” from the other side no matter what. This part will have to be carefully handled. To many powerful institutions have to much at stake in this. Frankly they are watching the implosion of the IPCC with horror and fear for what comes next.

Most likely it will be a whitewash, but it won’t end there. Prosecutions are likely as funds used by Mann could be said to have been obtained under false pretences.

In the release; reporter Collen Boyle says:

(But) conservative groups are already mobilizing to respond to the university’s findings.

Bad conservatives, expecting some honesty in science.. you bad!

  5. My2cents says:

The best result would be to find Mann guilty of academic fraud, and then terminate his employment, impound his pension, and expunge all his works.

It’s bad to be convicted, but worse to be forgotten and ignored, except as a butt for bad jokes.

Climate “scientists” rank just below phrenologists and astrologers. They couldn’t hold a real job in industry, so they just keep lying to obtain more government grants.
