We just woke up in California to read the breaking story of Dr. Rajendra Pachauri being busted for a bald-faced lie regarding Glaciergate. No time yet to write it up ourselves, so let’s just go straight to the UK Times article for the story.

The chairman of the leading climate change watchdog was informed that claims about melting Himalayan glaciers were false before the Copenhagen summit, The Times has learnt.

Rajendra Pachauri was told that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment that the glaciers would disappear by 2035 was wrong, but he waited two months to correct it. He failed to act despite learning that the claim had been refuted by several leading glaciologists.

The IPCC’s report underpinned the proposals at Copenhagen for drastic cuts in global emissions.

Dr Pachauri, who played a leading role at the summit, corrected the error last week after coming under media pressure. He told The Times on January 22 that he had only known about the error for a few days. He said: “I became aware of this when it was reported in the media about ten days ago. Before that, it was really not made known. Nobody brought it to my attention. There were statements, but we never looked at this 2035 number.”

Asked whether he had deliberately kept silent about the error to avoid embarrassment at Copenhagen, he said: “That’s ridiculous. It never came to my attention before the Copenhagen summit. It wasn’t in the public sphere.”

However, a prominent science journalist said that he had asked Dr Pachauri about the 2035 error last November. Pallava Bagla, who writes for Science journal, said he had asked Dr Pachauri about the error. He said that Dr Pachauri had replied: “I don’t have anything to add on glaciers.”

[Read the rest of the story here at The Times...]

Here are two other good takes on the breaking story:

Uh Oh – Pachauri caught out in IPCC 2035 glacier melt issue (WWUT)

The end is nigh (EU Referendum

More information for the UN, Barack Obama and Al Gore to ignore. Where the hell is that chickenshit Al Gore hiding out lately anyway?

Just the title alone tells you how much fun they have with the subject: 12 more glaciers that haven’t heard the news about global warming. it begins:

The glaciers are melting! The glaciers are melting! The glaciers are…uhhhhh…never mind.

Turns out the IPCC’s chicken little story that all the Himalayan glaciers are melting is just another exaggeration. Or fraud. Take your choice. You know, like the stats coming out of East Anglia CRU. And its claim that Antarctica is melting. And that Greenland’s ice cap is melting. And that sea levels are rising. And that the polar bears are dying. Fact is, some glaciers are retreating, but many others around the world are growing.

“But how is that possible? How can glaciers be growing when the world is warming up like a package of Jiffy-Pop in a microwave?”

Here are a dozen glaciers (or groups of glaciers) around the world that are growing almost as quickly as global warming skepticism.

Hysterical site, and they do enough articles that make fun of warmers to warrant a skeptic’s bookmark.

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

Yes, you read that right. He admitted it. The dominoes are falling one after the after. What a week its been for seekers of truth!

Just hours ago we published a story which showed Glaciologist Syed Hasnain withheld his knowledge that the Himalayan glacier 2035 melt story was false, and that the company he worked for, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Delhi-based company of which the IPPC Chairman Dr. Pachauri is director-general, benefited by this to the tune of a substantial share of a $500,000 grant from one of America’s leading charities, along with a share in a three million euro research study funded by the EU.

Now, hot on the heels of that, comes a story from the Daily Mail, in which they interview another scientist, Dr. Murari Lal, who admits the data had not been verified.

Here’s the story as the Daily Mail tells it (emphasis ours):

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action.

‘It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.’

Dr Lal’s admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation.

According to the IPCC’s statement of principles, its role is ‘to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information – IPCC reports should be neutral with respect to policy’.

The claim that Himalayan glaciers are set to disappear by 2035 rests on two 1999 magazine interviews with glaciologist Syed Hasnain, which were then recycled without any further investigation in a 2005 report by the environmental campaign group WWF.

It was this report that Dr Lal and his team cited as their source.

The WWF article also contained a basic error in its arithmetic. A claim that one glacier was retreating at the alarming rate of 134 metres a year should in fact have said 23 metres – the authors had divided the total loss measured over 121 years by 21, not 121.

Last Friday, the WWF website posted a humiliating statement recognising the claim as ‘unsound’, and saying it ‘regrets any confusion caused’.

Dr Lal said: ‘We knew the WWF report with the 2035 date was “grey literature” [material not published in a peer-reviewed journal]. But it was never picked up by any of the authors in our working group, nor by any of the more than 500 external reviewers, by the governments to which it was sent, or by the final IPCC review editors.’

Continue reading the whole story at The Daily Mail.

The TimesOnline reports:

But Syed Hasnain, the Indian glaciologist erroneously quoted as making the [Himalayan glacier melt] 2035 prediction, said that responsibility had to lie with them [the IPCC]. “It is the lead authors — blame goes to them,” he told The Times. “There are many mistakes in it. It is a very poorly made report.”

But, even though we referenced this article in a previous story on Pachauri, a reader today pointed out something that we didn’t even notice. Read these paragraphs, and particularly the one in bold:

Professor Hasnain, who was not involved in drafting the IPCC report, said that he noticed some of the mistakes when he first read the relevant section in 2008.

That was also the year he joined The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in Delhi, which is headed by Dr Pachauri.

He said he realised that the 2035 prediction was based on an interview he gave to the New Scientist magazine in 1999, although he blamed the journalist for assigning the actual date.

He said that he did not tell Dr Pachauri because he was not working for the IPCC and was busy with his own programmes at the time.

“I was keeping quiet as I was working here,” he said. “My job is not to point out mistakes. And you know the might of the IPCC. What about all the other glaciologists around the world who did not speak out?”

Yes, Mr. Hasnain, what about all the other glaciologists around the world who did not speak out? Seems like a common occurrence in all areas of climate change “science.”

UPDATE:

Another reader just sent us some VERY interesting information. About Syed Hasnain, who’s job wasn’t to point out mistakes. Maybe there is another reason he kept his mouth shut. From the UK Telegraph comes a story exposing that Hasnain works for the Delhi-based company of which Dr Pachauri is director-general:

What has now come to light, however, is that the scientist from whom this claim originated, Dr Syed Hasnain, has for the past two years been working as a senior employee of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Delhi-based company of which Dr Pachauri is director-general. Furthermore, the claim – now disowned by Dr Pachauri as chairman of the IPCC – has helped TERI to win a substantial share of a $500,000 grant from one of America’s leading charities, along with a share in a three million euro research study funded by the EU.

Yes, keeping his mouth shut resulted in an extra half-million for Pachauri’s TERI.

Follow the money.

In a TimesOnline story today, Indian head of the UN climate panel Dr Rajendra Pachauri defended their on the embarrassing retraction of a prediction that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035. But, he also warned that that there may be further errors.

Obviously feeling the heat, he reacted defensively:

Glaciergate, that lying little sister to Climategate, finally walked into the light of truth and fessed up this week, unlike her more sinister and petulant big brother, as reported in Wednesday’s UK Guardian.

Glaciergate, that lying little sister to Climategate, finally walked into the light of truth and fessed up this week, unlike her more sinister and petulant big brother, as reported in Wednesday’s UK Guardian.

The bad parent of this farce, the United Nations, should be congratulated on its first step to admitting it has failed to properly supervise the infant science of climate change. The UN stubbornly refuses to admit to the worst of its failings: recklessly putting all its trust in this immature field of scientific discovery. As I’ve repeatedly stated, no scientist has yet studied for a university degree in climatology. Pointedly, careless parents often pick bad babysitters and that’s what the UN did when it put its trust in Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and this is where top-level investigations must focus next.

Under Pachuari’s guidance climate scientists were given free rein to lie, cheat and cut corners, and get away with such misbehaviour for years. The Australian, in its latest article,’Heeding the political lessons of Glaciergate’ rightly suggests that the IPCC, like any responsible governmental body, should have constantly questioned and monitored more diligently this young field of science.

So it comes as no surprise that the IPCC, to maintain the faintest shred of credibility, backed down over one of the most absurd of its claim that some Himalayan glaciers would probably disappear by 2035.

As The Australian reports:

“The IPCC’s statement yesterday that the ‘clear and well-established standards of evidence’ had not been properly applied to the claim, is an attempt to put the best possible spin on a blunder that has reverberated around the world since it was revealed last weekend. In fact, Glaciergate, in large part, is about an extraordinary reliance on a third-hand source—a news story published in New Scientist almost a decade before it was included in the IPCC’s fourth assessment report of 2007. It doesn’t get much more humiliating than that for a body that has positioned itself as the global scientific authority on climate change.”

Although the Glaciergate admission is welcome it does not go far enough. The UN is fudging just like its miscreant scientists, in not fully admitting that the sloppiness and handling of climate change data in Climategate is far more egregious. Like any poor parent it sees its children through rose coloured spectacles and has yet to address the misdeeds of such crooked researchers as Penn State’s Michael Mann and the University of East Anglia’s Phil Jones.

But as the family of nations turn away from signing up to needless cap and trade laws ever more of the global neighborhood are looking forward to the day when the UN finally distances itself from every bad sheep. Not least on that list is the small clique of corrupt climatologists encouraged by Dr. Pachauri and “kissing cousin,” Al Gore to be so cavalier with the truth.

Former U.S vice president Al Gore once famously said: “I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it [anthropogenic global warming] is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are.”

In other words, Al says lie and exaggerate! It’s no wonder petulance and deceit grows when fed by such sinister role models. The UN encouraged its brats by over-indulging and spoiling them with lavish government grants so that the delinquency spread to corrupt the most impressionable and idealistic in society with hype and propaganda.

So I say to all those believers of climate change who have faith in the UN: if you raise your family on lies then don’t be surprised when they finally disappoint you.

Well what do you know, ABC News, via Reuters, has actually picked up the Himalayan glaciers story.

But that’s as far as the good news goes.

You won’t find the story on CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, AP, New York Times, LA Times or any other major network. You need to go to more courageous papers in the UK and Australia, smaller conservative new sources, and of course blogs like this one.
